We Did It!

Just 2 weeks after putting Hawk in underwear full time we did it!! Here we are, a month later and Hawk has not had any accidents or regressions *knocks on wood* We take him out for hours at a time and he lets me know when he has to go and has no problems using public restrooms. At first, I would ask him like what seemed to be every 10 seconds if he had to go, in fear he might be too distracted and have an accident, but he would just tell me “no” & if I took him anyway he would refuse to sit. So, I just decided to put all of my trust in him lol I just stopped worrying about it, we would just go on about our day and just wait on him…. You guys, it worked! Stress Free outings and days at home.

During the 2 weeks I thought I was in for the wildest ride ever, I thought “omg maybe I should’ve waited”, I thought the accidents wouldn’t stop, I thought I would run my washer to the ground. When I sit back now and think about it, it wasn’t even that bad!! It was so much easier than I had expected.

Ok, now let’s get to what I’ve been asked; HOW DID YOU DO IT?!

  1. First and Foremost, I cannot stress this enough: Wait until YOUR child is READY.
  2. Keep track of the time. Accidents and all. You will eventually notice a pattern.
  3. Once the pattern is picked up, you will take your child to the potty on or around those times. (If you notice he/she would eliminate at 9am then have an accident at 9:45, I would start out taking him/her every 30 min)
  4. We did not do rewards, we simply praised verbally, but you can celebrate any way you’d like!
  5. If your child is refusing to go to the bathroom and you are using a potty chair (we did not) try moving that potty chair into whatever room you are in or whatever room your child feels comfortable in. You can also have him/her take a favorite toy with them so as to feel safe.
  6. Please DO NOT force your child to use the potty or regular size toilet. If he/she is just straight out refusing, then just leave them be. Forcing them could cause trauma and they might “never” want to use the potty/toilet.
  7. ONCE YOU START YOU CANNOT STOP! Some people make the mistake of starting ‘potty training’ but reverting back to diapers or pull-ups whenever it is convenient for themDoing this confuses the child!! Once ‘potty training’ starts it means no more diapers/pull-ups period. Going out of town? Underwear. Long Drive? Underwear. Mom/Dad is sick? Underwear. Weekend? Underwear. Your child is most likely going to have an accident BUT he/she will learn from this.
  8. Patience. You will need lots of this. Your child is not going to learn over night, he/she has been eliminating in a diaper since birth. Please always remember this and please always be understanding and kind.

You know you are always welcome to contact me via any of my social networks if you have questions or just need to vent, so please do! I wish I could have written down every single detail but it’s totally impossible right now haha!!

Till next time 🙂
